South Lanarkshire football club wins award for making Every Can Count for good causes

East Kilbride Football Club have been awarded a Green Can Award by recycling programme Every Can Counts in recognition of its recycling and fundraising achievements. The club has managed to raise vital funds for the local community and Project Gambia through recycling empty drinks cans over the past four years.

East Kilbride Football Club first started recycling empty drinks cans with the support of Every Can Counts in 2012, and during this time has managed to raise in excess of £3,000 through recycling over 15 tonnes of empty drinks cans. The club use LAMH Recycle Ltd for processing their recycled material and are delighted to work with CEO Anita Boyle who has been hugely supportive with the Every Can Counts programme.

The money made through recycling goes directly to the club’s charity outreach programmes, which includes paying for essential football coaching at club, recent donations to International sports trust, loaves and fishes charity and to support Project Gambia: People Feeding People; a Scottish-based charity supporting over 250 deaf Gambian children by providing them with food and resources.

Speaking about the success of the recycling scheme Mike Peden, who created the football club’s recycling and outreach programmes, said: “The Every Can Counts Green Can Award is a fantastic achievement for the hard work the club has carried out of the last few years. The recycling scheme has really worked to not only encourage our players and club visitors to think about the importance of recycling, but to also raise money for fantastic causes. This includes funding sports equipment and training for youngsters here in the local area and also in Gambia.” The club plan to continue their good work by expanding their donations to more local charities in the coming months.

Jonathan Easthope, Brand Manager for Every Can Counts, said: “This award highlights the great work that East Kilbride Football Club is doing by raising awareness of recycling and helping make Scotland a zero waste society. We’re really proud of all their efforts over the last three years and urge more organisations to get inspired by what the club has achieved, and become involved in the Every Can Counts programme.”

Every Can Counts and KA repeat successful partnership at Notting Hill Carnival

Every Can Counts, KA drinks, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) and recycling company SUEZ joined forces again at this years’ Notting Hill Carnival to encourage an estimated one million revellers to recycle empty drinks cans at the world famous event.

Installed on Portobello Green at the heart of the festivities the ‘KANIVAL KRUSH’ can exchange was staffed by 12 staff and volunteers from all four organisations over the course of the two day event. Carnival-goers were encouraged to bring their empty drinks cans for recycling and receive a free can of KA in exchange. The empty cans were placed into segregated bins ready for the SUEZ team to recycle after the event.

Jonathan Easthope, Every Can Counts Brand Manager says: “This was the second year that the KAnival Krush can exchange has operated at Notting Hill Carnival. It’s an amazing event and the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of recycling drinks can ‘on the go’.  Once again we had a really enthusiastic response from the public and we were collecting at least 1000 cans from the public for every hour that we were open.  We’re really grateful for the support of Suez Waste Management, RBKC and KA which made it all possible.”

Adrian Troy, Head of Marketing at AG Barr commented: “KA has a close association with Notting Hill Carnival thanks to the brand’s Caribbean heritage. So it was great to be able to be involved for a second year and do our bit to support recycling at the carnival in partnership with Every Can Counts.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Recycling & Recovery UK division of  SUEZ, David Palmer-Jones, said:  “The Notting Hill Carnival is one of Europe’s biggest street parties, but like any good party, when it’s finished, there’s a lot of cleaning up required. Our crews swept up over 300 tonnes of materials over the weekend and recycling as much of it as possible is our top priority. The partnership with Every Can Counts and KA, is an inventive way to get people recycling.”

Cornish fundraiser receives national recycling award for recycling achievement

Local fundraiser Peter Sweet has received a national recycling award from Every Can Counts for his outstanding work in collecting thousands of cans in support of The Children’s Hospice South West.

Peter teamed up with local recycling business, Henry Orchard & Sons – St Austell to raise money for the Precious Lives Appeal by collecting and recycling drinks cans in the local area. The aim was to raise enough funds to build a new hospice called Little Harbour, supporting families in Plymouth and Cornwall. This has resulted in a staggering £12,000 being raised to date demonstrating ‘Every Can Counts’ has made a difference.

Due to the hard work and dedication, the Little Harbour Hospice is now completed and serving the local community. Peter is still continuing his fundraising efforts for the Hospice and collects drinks cans from business and local can recyclers in the area raising funds for the hospice.

Peter commented on his award: “As well as raising money for a good cause and tidying the local area I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that every can I collect is infinitely recyclable and the money raised has helped the Little Harbour Hospice.”

Presenting the award Ruth Meeke, Programme Manager of Every Can Counts, said:  “Peter is an inspiration, he dedicates most of his free time to fund raise for the Little Harbour Hospice, he is a keen can recycler, the ‘Every Can Counts’ Green Can Award is fully deserved and  recognises Peter’s dedication to recycling over the years.”

Henry Orchard said: “Peter has shown complete dedication for over 10 years with his recycling efforts and the money he has raised for the hospice. He is an inspiration for others and I am very pleased that he has been recognised for his hard work over the last decade.”

The Children’s Hospice provides hospice care for children with life-limiting conditions and their whole family across the South West. To find out more visit http://www.chsw.org.uk/
